School Tours. Field Trips. Eco-Excursions
Educational tours and school field trips of our hydroponic, aquaponic and Urban Farm are available for public, private, charter and home school groups. Educators will find this experience to be a rich and exciting resource of educational opportunities for students of all ages. UFI offers STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) based programming tailored to grade level targeted topics.
Topics that will be covered may include: garden cultivation technology, algae and coral cultivation, soil chemistry, invasive species, beneficial insects, insect and plant life cycle, native plant identification, permaculture, animal husbandry and system engineering (solar, vertical, flood and drain, deep water techniques, etc.). Students will also have an opportunity to learn about the importance and applications of several urban farming growing techniques such as hydroponics, aquaculture and raised bed gardens.
The personalized tours take approximately 2-3 hours. We utilize a revolving tour presentation to be able to accommodate groups of all sizes. Larger groups are broken down into groups of 15-20 students to ensure the greatest level of involvement while maintaining the safety and enjoyment of the students. A ratio of 1 teacher or chaperone per every 10-12 students is maintained with our programs. Times slots available are from 9am-12pm or from 1pm-3pm.
UFI will supply 1 trained guide instructor for each group of up to 20 students.
Field trip costs range from $8.50 per student for groups over 25 to $15.00 per student for groups under 25 with a minimum group size of 12 (smaller groups can be accommodated on a case by case basis). Chaperones and teachers up to the stated ratio above (1 teacher or chaperone per every 10 students) will be admitted at no additional cost. Additional chaperones will be subject to a $12 per person admission fee. It’s up to you to arrange and coordinate your transportation for the scheduled field trip.
A 50% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of scheduling to lock in a tour. Once a trip is booked, the school will be contacted within 2 days by a representative of the Urban Farming Institute to confirm the details of the tour. The remaining balance must be paid in full no later than 7 days prior to the scheduled field trip.
After your trip has been booked, you will receive a confirmation letter and additional instructions by email. Your trip is NOT confirmed until deposit is paid and the confirmation letter has been returned by UFI. If you do not receive a confirmation letter within 7 days of receipt of deposit, please contact UFI at firstname.lastname@example.org to verify receipt of request and deposit.
Please review the letter make sure that all the information is correct and make a copy of the letter for each teacher/class level that will be attending.
