Our Community Gardens
Learning to grow your own food right at home can best be learned in the “living classroom” to be found at the Community Gardens at the Discovery Farm and Gardens in the City of Oakland Park. The community gardens as well as the Discovery Farm are operated by the Urban Farming Institute in partnership with the City.
There are currently 32 raised bed gardens each of which measures 4’ x 8’ in size. The garden includes a special soil blend, water and ongoing instruction provided by UFI. Gardeners are assisted by Master Gardeners as well as professional growers as they learn how to grow in this subtropical environment.
The gardens provide year round gardening opportunities. The fall growing season runs from September through May with a summer of “mini season” running from June through August. With the help of the professionals at UFI successful year round growing is demonstrated even during the hottest months of the year.
Garden Chats are provided each Saturday morning where questions can be answered and techniques can be discussed. These chats are open to all community garden members and are free of charge. The community gardens at the Discovery Farm are open daily.
